Ruling is the specification schools actually specify, and it narrows as handwriting develops, so a book bought a year out is the wrong tool rather than a near miss. Binding is the second call: stapled exercise books are cheap and disposable by design, binder books slot into a folder, and lecture pads tear out cleanly for handing in.
