The one that has to go all the way in
Total immersion thermometer, -20 to +110 degrees C in 1 degree increments. 31cm long, white, with an anti-roll device.
Read this before you mix it with your other thermometers. This is a total immersion instrument: the supplier states it must be completely immersed to read accurately. Our partial-immersion lab thermometers are the opposite - they are calibrated to a 76mm mark on the stem. Put the two side by side in the same beaker and they will disagree, and neither of them is faulty. If your class is comparing results, use one type or the other, not both.
Given that, this is the cheapest thermometer in the range at $6.50 and it reads down to -20, ten degrees lower than the lab pair, which makes it the one for freezing-point work.
On the name. The supplier lists this product as an "Environmentally Friendly Thermometer" but does not say what makes it so. They describe it as pure white and non-toxic, which usually means mercury-free - but they do not print that, and we are not going to claim an environmental credential on their behalf. We have asked. Until they answer, we are listing it under what it demonstrably is: a total immersion thermometer, 31cm, -20 to 110.
