Staedtler make the 989 with a wood handle, metal ferrule and synthetic fibre that is easy to clean, and say it has excellent elasticity and shape retention. They list it for watercolour, acrylic, gouache and oil, and for working water-soluble pencils, crayons and chalks.
The three sizes split the work neatly. The #2 round handles detail and fine lines, the #8 round carries more paint for washes and petals, and the #8 flat gives straight edges and block fills.
