Air drying clay for schools that work without a kiln
Northcote Pottery No Fire Clay, also called Sunclay, supplier code ML704, is a soft and pliable air drying modelling clay supplied in a 4 litre airtight plastic bucket.
Northcote Pottery describes the clay as non toxic and made from natural materials, and says it handles like natural clay with water and tools. It must be kept moist while you work. The supplier suggests pieces of foam rubber soaked with water on the table, and moistening your fingers to work water back in if the clay starts to crack.
Joins need scoring, slip made from clay, water and a drop of PVA, then pressing and smoothing with a modelling tool. Drying takes approximately one week to ten days at room temperature, and the dry piece can be painted with Chromacryl or Vipond. The supplier says the clay bonds to itself with a little pressure.
Keep the lid secure between sessions, and store used clay in a separate airtight container. Find tools in craft ceramics, more clay in craft modeling clay, and paint in craft paints and painting supplies.
