100 plastic chips in assorted colours, each with a steel ring sealed inside. Sonically welded. Ages 5 and over.
Read the age carefully, because it is the useful part. These are rated 5+ where every magnet in this range is 8+. They are not magnets - they are the target. That means a five-year-old can do the picking-up half of a magnetism lesson with a wand held by an adult, which is otherwise impossible in an early years room.
The ring is inside the chip, sonically welded in, so there is nothing to work loose. A child sees an ordinary coloured counter and watches it fly to a magnet - and has to work out why, which is a better question than any worksheet asks.
They also work as plain counters when magnetism is finished, which is more than most single-purpose science consumables manage.
