Metric Ellipse Master Template With 68 Ellipses
Staedtler 977 505 is the Mars professional ellipse master, a metric template with 68 ellipses from 5 mm to 30 mm set out in four projections.
A circle seen at an angle becomes an ellipse, and the ellipse narrows as the viewing angle drops. Having four projections side by side lets you match the right ellipse to the perspective of a cylinder, wheel, cup or hole, instead of drawing it freehand. The template labels each column by its axis ratio, which you can read in the photo as 1:1.16, 1:1.42, 1:1.73 and 1:2.37.
Staedtler make it from 0.8 mm green transparent plastic with a matte side against glare, and add built-in inking risers so a technical pen can follow the opening without a smear. Identification and the 200 mm scale are printed in black. For accurate sizes Staedtler specify a 0.5 mm pencil lead.
