Six Building Plan Scales On One Triangular Ruler
Staedtler Mars 561 98-1BK is version 1 of the Mars triangular reduction scale ruler, carrying 1:20, 1:25, 1:50, 1:75, 1:100 and 1:125 on its three faces.
That group of ratios runs from close-up detail work at 1:20 out to whole-floor layouts at 1:125, which is why version 1 tends to sit on the desks of architecture and building design students. Turn the ruler to the next face and you read straight off the drawing in real-world units, with no mental arithmetic between scales.
Staedtler mould the 561 from solid white plastic and colour the grooves between the faces so each scale is quick to find. The ruler comes on a hangable blistercard that prints the six ratios on the front, and Staedtler state it is made in Germany.
Working at site or survey scales instead? Version 4 runs from 1:100 to 1:500, while the DIN version reaches down to 1:2.5 for detail drawings.
