Squeeze To Set, Turn To Fine-Tune
The Staedtler Mars comfort 552 01 is a quick-setting compass: press the large push-buttons to slide the legs straight to roughly the right radius, then turn the centre wheel to fine-tune it.
A plain centre wheel compass needs many turns to go from a small circle to a large one. The 552 skips that with its sturdy push-button mechanism, then keeps the wheel for exact final setting, so it suits drawing work that jumps between very different radii. Hinges on the lead and needle legs let the points stand parallel on large radii.
Staedtler give the length as 170mm. The lead part and needle are interchangeable, with a 4mm lead shank. The 552 01 comes in a case with hinged lid holding the compass, a universal adapter for fineliners and drafting pens, and a spares box. An extension bar is not included in 552 01; it comes in the 552 02 set.
Staedtler's site and catalogue quote slightly different maximum circle sizes, so we leave the figure out until it is confirmed.
