Centre Wheel Precision With Extra Reach
Staedtler Mars comfort 551 02 is the 551 precision masterbow compass packed with an extension bar, taking its maximum circle from about 280mm to about 500mm.
Large circles are where a compass most often lets you down, because a wide setting magnifies any slip. This set pairs the long reach of an extension bar, which fits the needle leg exactly, with a centre wheel on a spindle guide that holds the setting fixed. Both figures are given by Staedtler on their Australian site and in their 2024 catalogue.
The compass itself is solid metal, 154mm long, with a spring-bow head, a hinged leg joint and needle shoe, an interchangeable shouldered needle and a lead part with a 4mm shank. In the hinged case you also get a universal adapter, so drafting pens and fineliners can draw the circle in ink, and a spares box. The catalogue describes the compass as nickel-free.
Typical uses are plan views of round tables and roundabouts, arcs on site plans and large construction geometry.
More geometry compasses, scale rulers and technical drawing tools.
