A Solid Metal Masterbow For Exact Radii
The Staedtler Mars comfort 551 01 is a solid metal precision compass with a spindle guide, spring-bow head and centre wheel, supplied in a case with a hinged lid.
On a spring-bow compass the radius is set by turning the centre wheel along the spindle rather than by pulling the legs apart, so the setting does not drift while you draw. Large push-buttons make the wheel easy to use, and Staedtler note the design prevents unintended setting adjustments. That precision is why masterbow compasses are the usual choice for repeated identical circles, bolt-hole patterns and accurate construction work.
Staedtler give a maximum circle of approximately 280mm and a length of 154mm. The leg joint and needle shoe are hinged for parallel positioning on wide radii, the needle is a shouldered type and the lead part has a 4mm shank. The case also holds a universal adapter, for using fineliners and drafting pens, plus a spares box. Staedtler's catalogue lists it as nickel-free.
Need larger circles? The 551 02 adds an extension bar.
