A Simple First Compass For Primary And Lower Secondary
Staedtler 550 50 is the Noris school compass in its basic form: one compass and a lead box in a case with a hinged lid.
Staedtler pitch it at the first circle-drawing exercises at school. The needle is obtuse-angled, which Staedtler call a safety needle: it is blunter than a drafting point, so it grips the page without the sharp tip of a professional compass. Adult supervision is still sensible for younger children.
The compass is 124 mm long and Staedtler give a maximum circle diameter of approximately 300 mm, comfortably more than an A4 page needs. Spare lead sits in the lead box, and the case itself has a ruler scale printed along one side, so a quick measurement does not mean hunting for a ruler.
There is no universal adapter in this version. If students want to fit their own pencil or a pen, the 550 60 adds one in the same case.
