Metal School Compass With Centre Wheel Adjustment
Staedtler 550 01 is the Noris metal school compass with a centre wheel, supplied with a universal adapter and a lead box, packed in a hinged-lid case.
This is the step up from the basic Noris school compasses. A centre wheel and quick-setting mechanism hold the radius once it is set, so circles do not creep open halfway round, which matters once geometry moves on to constructions and accurate bisectors. Both the lead leg and the needle leg are hinged, and Staedtler list the lead part and the shouldered needle as interchangeable.
The universal adapter lets students fit a pencil or pen in place of the lead. Staedtler give the length as 156 mm.
Maximum size is the one detail to check. Staedtler's website and catalogue give one figure and the current case carries a sticker with a larger one, so we leave it to the FAQ. If you need bigger circles, the 550 02 is the same compass with an extension bar.
