Lead Pointer For 2 mm Leadholders
The Staedtler Mars 502 is a desk tub lead pointer: it sharpens 2 mm leads held in a leadholder rather than wooden pencils.
You push the leadholder into the cone and turn it; Staedtler fit an automatic stop, so the cutter stops taking off graphite when the point is finished. A measurement device on top sets how far the lead protrudes, which adjusts the cone of the point, and an integrated dust wiper cleans graphite off the tip as it comes out.
Staedtler describe the cutter as a metal lead sharpener. The navy ribbed base collects the graphite dust and lifts away from the black top for emptying, as the open photo shows, and Staedtler's close-up of the top plate shows it marked STAEDTLER 502 GERMANY.
It is made for 2 mm leads in a leadholder such as the Mars technico 780 C, including the Mars carbon leads from 4B to 4H. It will not sharpen wooden pencils or fine mechanical pencil leads.
Related ranges: mechanical drawing pencils, pencil leads, drawing supplies and Staedtler.
