Brown gives calligraphy the look of iron gall ink on an old letter. It is softer on the eye than black, which suits long quotations, recipe cards, poems copied into a keepsake book, labels for a pantry or garden, and captions in a nature journal where black would feel too heavy beside pencil sketches of leaves and birds.
The pen has Staedtler's approx. 2.0 mm chisel tip, which builds natural thick and thin contrast when held at a constant angle. According to Staedtler the Multi Ink is fast-drying, waterproof, lightfast and does not show through the page, so both sides of a journal spread stay usable. For a darker earth tone, umber 790 is the next step; golden ochre 16 adds a warm highlight beside it.
