Light Black For Softer Outlines, Sketching And Greyscale Depth
Staedtler 371-90 is colour 90 light black in the pigment brush pen 371 range, offered here as a box of 10 pens.
Not every line needs full black. Light black gives outlines that frame a drawing without overpowering pastel colours, sketch lines that sit back behind the colour, and the darkest step in a greyscale study before a final touch of 99 intense black. Portrait and urban sketchers reach for a softened black like this for hair, shadows and window openings, where a hard black can look heavy.
The brush nib is Staedtler's medium strength design, flexible enough for tapered strokes and firm enough for steady contour lines. Staedtler list the Multi Ink as permanent, waterproof and fast drying, and say it can be painted over without smudging once dry, so watercolour or other pens can go over the line work. They also state it will not bleed through paper.
