A Pale Cool Grey For First Shadows And Soft Tone
Staedtler 371-870 is cool grey light, the palest cool grey in the pigment brush pen 371 line, listed here as a pack of ten pens.
This is the pen to reach for first. A light grey maps out where shadows fall before any colour goes down, softens the edge of a cast shadow, and gives white objects such as clouds, porcelain, snow or a white shirt some form without making them look grubby. Over coloured areas it dulls a shade slightly, which helps push a background back so the subject stands forward.
Because Multi Ink is translucent, several passes of 870 build a stepped scale on their own, and 87 and 871 carry the scale on when more depth is needed. Staedtler describe the ink as fast-drying, permanent and waterproof once dry, highly lightfast and free of show-through, even on the thin papers used in bullet journals and sketchbooks.
