Staedtler 371 C36 gathers 36 pigment brush pens into one box, running from pastel yellow and light peach through magenta, pacific blue and jade green to umber, six warm and cool greys and two blacks.
The greys are what set this box apart for illustrators and designers. Warm grey light and medium, cool grey light, medium and dark, plus light black and intense black give enough steps to shade objects, render shadows under a character or build grey scale value studies before adding colour. Around them sit the everyday brights and a run of softer pastels for skies, blossom and backgrounds.
Multi Ink, as Staedtler put it, is a water-based and translucent India ink made with pigments; it dries fast and ends up permanent and waterproof, and Staedtler classify the lightfastness of each colour on the blue wool and grey scales. Dried layers can be worked over without smudging, which suits glazing one tone over another. The stable brush nib gives thick and thin lines from the same pen, and the range is made in Germany according to Staedtler.
