Twelve Oil Pastels To Start Painting With Colour
Staedtler 2420 C12 is a cardboard box of 12 oil pastels in assorted colours, the smaller of the two boxed sets in the Staedtler 2420 range.
Staedtler describe these as brilliant, colour-intensive oil pastels. Unlike chalky soft pastels, an oil pastel lays down a creamy, waxy stroke that sits on the page without dust, so there is no need for fixative and very little mess on the desk.
Each stick is round, roughly 11 mm across, and wrapped in a paper sleeve that keeps colour off your fingers. Staedtler list them as waterproof, for almost all smooth surfaces and for many painting techniques, which opens up wax resist under a watercolour wash, layering one colour over another and scratching back through the top layer.
Twelve colours cover the basics for a first set, a classroom table or a sketch bag. The swatch strip printed along the bottom of the box shows the shades inside. Staedtler make 48 colours in the range, and the 24 box is the step up when you want more mid tones.
