Draw With Crayon, Then Add Water
Staedtler 223 C24 is a cardboard box of 24 watercolour crayons in assorted colours: round crayons of about 8 mm that lay down colour like a crayon and turn into a wash with a wet brush.
Staedtler describe the 223 as highly opaque and easy to blend. Draw dry for bold, waxy texture, then go over parts of the drawing with a brush and water to soften the strokes into washes. Their notes also point to layering and scratching back through colour for special effects.
Each crayon sits in a paper sleeve, which Staedtler say keeps hands clean, and the round 8 mm profile is a comfortable size for broad areas. The box is printed 24 Watercolour crayons with a swatch strip of the colours along the bottom, and belongs to the Design Journey range.
Use them on watercolour paper or heavy card so the surface takes water without cockling. If you want fewer colours, the 223 C12 box holds 12.
