Crayons That Turn Into Watercolour With A Wet Brush
Staedtler 223 C12 is a box of 12 water-soluble wax-based crayons: draw as with an ordinary crayon, then brush water over the lines to dissolve them into a wash.
Staedtler describe the colours as highly opaque and easy to blend. Used dry, they colour like a crayon. Go over the marks with a damp brush and the pigment loosens into watercolour, so a single crayon can give a bold line and a soft background on the same page.
For special effects Staedtler mention layering and scratching: build one shade on another, then scrape through with a blunt tool to reveal the colour beneath. Each crayon is round, about 8 mm across, and wears a paper sleeve to keep hands clean.
Heavier paper such as watercolour or mixed media sheets copes best with water. The 223 also comes in a box of 24, and Staedtler watercolour paint boxes and brushes pair well with it.
