Very Hard 4H Lead For Faint Setting-Out Lines
Staedtler Mars carbon 200-4H: twelve hard 4H leads in a plastic tray, each about 2 mm wide and 130 mm long.
4H is the hardest degree Staedtler make in the Mars carbon line. It produces a very pale, fine line that is easy to rub out or to cover with ink or colour, which is why it gets used for perspective grids, light guide lines, lettering layouts and marking up drawing card before the real work begins.
A hard lead keeps its point for longer, so a sharpened 4H can hold a crisp line through a long session in a 2 mm leadholder like the Mars technico 780 C. Staedtler describe the range as suitable for paper and drawing card and state that the leads are made in Germany.
Because it is so light, 4H is a poor choice for notes or anything that must photocopy well. Pair it with HB or B from the same range for the finished drawing.
