The Step Between 2B And 4B
Staedtler tradition 110-3B gives you 12 soft pencils in the grade that bridges 2B and 4B, useful when one is a touch too light and the other a touch too dark.
Artists who work with a graded set often find the gap between 2B and 4B is where most of the middle tones live. 3B covers it: a soft, dark line with gentle pressure and plenty of room to build tone in layers, yet firm enough to hold an edge for hatching and outlines.
Staedtler put the tradition's toughness down to its lead: a special formulation that is super-bonded, which they say makes the pencil unbelievably break-resistant. The barrels carry gold STAEDTLER tradition 3B lettering on red and black, and Staedtler state the pencils are made in Germany.
