Soft Mars Lumograph Charcoal For The Deepest Darks
Staedtler 100C-S is the soft degree of the Mars Lumograph charcoal pencil, the S in Staedtler's three-degree range, sold as a box of 12.
Soft charcoal is where the drama in a drawing comes from: shadow under a chin, the dark side of a still life, night skies and a heavy foreground in a landscape. Staedtler write that this charcoal gives deep, velvety black tones and a textured, matte finish, with a soft laydown and smooth blending for flowing transitions. Use S late in a drawing over lighter M or H work, or on its own for loose, expressive gesture sketches.
Around the approx. 4.5 mm charcoal core sits a hexagonal wood case, so unlike a stick of willow charcoal the pencil can be sharpened to a point for controlled dark lines. Staedtler pair it with their kneadable art eraser 5427 and a blending stump 5426.
