Softest Lumograph Black, With A Thicker Lead
Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 100B-8B: twelve pencils in the softest and darkest grade of the black range, with a larger approx. 4.5 mm lead.
8B is the end of the scale for Lumograph black and the only grade with the thicker lead; 7B down to HB use approx. 3.6 mm. That extra diameter covers big areas quickly and holds up when you press for a full, flat black. Staedtler use a high carbon lead with minimal light reflection, so the darkest areas stay matte.
In Staedtler's description the laydown is soft and blendable, the lead resists breakage in sharpening and use, and strokes repeat evenly. Staedtler give Germany as the country of manufacture. Use a sharpener with a fresh blade, such as their 511 001 tub, and lift highlights back with the 5427 kneadable eraser.
