Twelve Lumograph Degrees In One Metal Tin
Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100 G12 S is a metal tin of 12 drawing pencils running from 8B down to 2H, a ready-made tonal range for sketching, shading and fine line work.
The lid lists the twelve grades: 8B, 7B, 6B and 5B at the soft end, 4B, 3B, 2B and B through the middle, then HB, F, H and 2H. That spread lets you keep the harder grades for crisp outlines and light hatching, move through HB and B for mid tones, then build the darkest areas with 6B to 8B without swapping brands or guessing how grades compare.
According to Staedtler the Lumograph graphite is graded finely enough for smooth shifts in tone, carries a faint metallic lustre, stands up well to sharpening and drawing pressure, and reproduces evenly stroke after stroke. Lead thickness rises as the grade softens: approx. 3.6 mm for 8B to 6B, approx. 2.5 mm for 5B to 3B and approx. 2.0 mm from 2B to 2H. Staedtler state the range is made in Germany.
The tin closes flat, so the set travels in a bag to a life drawing class and keeps each pencil in its own slot on the desk. Add a sharpener and eraser to complete the kit: Staedtler name the 511 001 tub and the 510 10 metal models, plus the Mars plastic 526 50.
