Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-9B comes in a box of 12 and gives a very soft, very dark mark for bold tonal work.
9B lays graphite down thickly with almost no pressure. It is useful for dense shadow fields, dark backgrounds that frame a subject, smudged atmospheric effects and quick tonal blocking at the start of a drawing.
Staedtler give the 9B an approximately 3.6 mm lead, as they do for 6B through 11B. The Lumograph line is described as finely graded with smooth tonal transitions, a subtle metallic lustre and strong resistance to breaking.
Very soft leads round off quickly and smear, so plan to protect your work. Made in Germany, Staedtler state. Lift highlights with the Mars plastic 526 50, and sharpen with the 511 001 tub sharpener.
