Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-8B is a box of 12 extra-soft pencils for the darkest passages of a drawing and for wide, sweeping marks.
8B gives a very dark, glossy grey-black that builds fast and blends easily. Artists use it for deep shadows in portraiture, stormy skies, strong silhouettes and energetic gesture drawing on large sheets, often finishing a piece that was started in harder grades.
The lead is approximately 3.6 mm across, as Staedtler specify for 6B through 11B. Staedtler describe Lumograph graphite as finely graded, with a subtle metallic lustre, smooth tonal transitions and high resistance to breaking.
The soft tip wears quickly and smudges readily, so keep a spare sheet under your hand. Made in Germany according to Staedtler, who pair it with their Mars plastic 526 50 eraser and 511 001 tub sharpener.
