This is a box of 12 Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-5B pencils, a very soft degree for expressive sketching and generous shading.
5B gives a loose, painterly mark. It suits quick gestural figure work, dramatic chiaroscuro, rough thumbnails and any drawing where you want rich darks from relaxed pressure. Because so much graphite comes off, it also blends readily with a finger, tissue or paper stump.
It is the softest degree with the approximately 2.5 mm lead; from 6B upward Staedtler move to a thicker core. The Lumograph line is described as giving smooth tonal transitions with a subtle metallic lustre and good resistance to breakage.
Work over a slip sheet to protect finished areas, since soft graphite travels. Staedtler state the 5B is made in Germany, and suggest the 511 001 tub sharpener or 510 10 for re-pointing.
