Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-4B arrives as a box of 12 soft pencils that give strong, dark marks while still drawing a reasonably tidy edge.
4B is where many artists switch from line to mass. It covers shadow areas quickly, renders hair, fur and foliage with real weight, and gives portrait studies the dark accents that lift a drawing off the page, all without the crumbly feel of the softest grades.
The pencil carries an approximately 2.5 mm lead, the size Staedtler use for 5B, 4B and 3B. They describe Lumograph graphite as finely graded for smooth tonal transitions with a subtle metallic lustre, and as resistant to breaking while you sharpen and draw.
Every pencil in the box is the same degree, so a class or studio can keep one grade on hand. Staedtler list Germany as the place of manufacture and recommend the Mars plastic 526 50 for erasing.
