The Softest Lumograph Grade For Deep, Dark Tone
Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-12B is the very soft end of the 24-degree Lumograph scale, supplied here as a box of 12 pencils.
Of the 24 Mars Lumograph degrees, which run from 12B down to 10H, 12B puts the most graphite onto the page with each pass. Artists reach for it to block in shadow, push the darkest values in a portrait or landscape, and build velvety backgrounds that harder grades only reach with heavy pressure.
Staedtler give the 12B a thicker lead than any other degree in the range, approximately 4.5 mm, so the point has support despite the softness. They describe the graphite as finely graded for smooth tonal change with a subtle metallic lustre, and say the lead holds up well while it is sharpened and while you draw.
Very soft graphite smudges readily, which helps when blending with a stump but means finished work wants a cover sheet. When the point wears down, Staedtler point to the 511 001 tub or the compact 510 10 in metal, and for lifting highlights the Mars plastic 526 50. The pencils are made in Germany, according to Staedtler.
