Velvety 11B Graphite For Rich Shadows
A box of 12 Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils in 11B, the second softest grade in the range, for drawings that need near-black accents and dense shadow.
Only 12B sits softer than 11B in the 24 Lumograph degrees. Staedtler give the 11B lead as approx. 3.6 mm, the same diameter as the 6B to 10B grades, while 12B moves up to approx. 4.5 mm. In practice 11B suits the last, darkest pass on a portrait or still life: eye sockets, hair, deep folds and the darkest background, laid over lighter grades.
Staedtler's own notes on Mars Lumograph mention smooth tone changes thanks to finely graded graphite, a faint metallic shine, strong resistance to breakage and even reproduction of each stroke. Made in Germany is printed on the barrel and stated by Staedtler. For sharpening they nominate the 511 001 tub model, or their 510 10 in metal; their eraser choice is the Mars plastic 526 50.
