616 pegs in 5, 10, 15 and 20mm, plus 4 connectable boards of 160 x 210mm each and red connectors. Ages 5 and up. $57.00.
Four sizes of peg is what makes this more than a colour activity. A mosaic built from 5mm and 20mm pegs has texture and scale as well as colour, so the same board can be a simple pattern for one child and a detailed picture for another. That is what lets one set stretch across a mixed-ability group.
The boards lock together in any arrangement. Four boards in a square, a long strip, an L - the red connectors do not force a layout, so the picture is not limited to 160 x 210mm.
What it is actually teaching. Pushing a 5mm peg into a hole is fine motor work; choosing which colour goes next is patterning and sequencing; copying the illustrated examples is visual discrimination. The child thinks they are making a picture.
Example designs are included to copy, and the whole thing works just as well with no example at all.
