Twelve prepared bacteria slides, $7.75 each
A set of 12 commercially prepared microscope slides covering bacterial shapes, Gram staining and named species.
Prepared slides solve the problem that makes microbiology hard to teach: you cannot culture bacteria in a classroom, and even if you could, a student would be looking at a smear they made badly. These are fixed, stained and mounted properly, so what a student sees down the barrel is what a textbook diagram is drawn from.
The set is structured, not random. The first three slides teach the two things that actually matter - shape (rods, spheres, spirals) and Gram reaction (positive, negative) - and the remaining nine are named species that illustrate them.
What is in the set: bacilli, cocci and spirillum; cocci, Gram positive and negative; bacilli, Gram positive and negative; Escherichia coli; Bacillus subtilis; Bacillus megaterium; Mycobacterium tuberculosis in tissue; Rhizobium in root nodule; Vibrio; Spirillum; Staphylococcus epidermidis; Streptococcus lactis. (We have corrected three species spellings from the supplier's own list.)
Handling. These are glass slides and they break. The supplier gives no handling instructions with the set beyond that. If your school has a lab technician, run the set past them before it goes into a classroom - they will have a view on storage and on which slides they want supervised. Use with a compound microscope; a stereo microscope will not resolve bacteria.
