Pilot's largest ink reservoir, inside a smoky black demonstrator barrel
The Pilot Custom 823 is a vacuum-filling fountain pen with a 14K gold medium nib, made in Japan for people who write a great deal and want to refill rarely.
The Custom 823 fills straight from the bottle through a plunger vacuum system: unscrew the blind cap, draw the rod up, dip the nib and push down in one stroke. Ink is pulled directly into the barrel, which Pilot rates at around 1.5 ml, several times what a cartridge holds. The translucent black resin barrel lets you see how much is left at a glance. The nib is Pilot's large size 15 in 14K gold, engraved and tuned for a medium point that lays a generous, wet line.
Gold gives the nib a softness that steel cannot match, and the medium point suits signatures, correspondence and long-form writing where a fine line feels thin. The screw cap seals the nib between sessions and posts securely for balance. It arrives in a presentation box with a bottle of Pilot INK-70 ink, so it is ready to fill and write on the day it is opened.
