The point of a magnetic ruler is that it stays where you put it. Draw a line, step back, talk to the class, come back - it has not slid down the board. That is the entire product, and it works well.
The catch: not every whiteboard is magnetic. The supplier is upfront about this - the magnets hold the ruler firmly to the board IF the board is metal-based. Painted, melamine and glass whiteboards are not, and the ruler will simply fall off them. Check yours with a fridge magnet before you order.
A full metre. Marked in metres and centimetres, which is the scale for demonstrating measurement to a whole class - big enough to be read from the back of the room, and long enough that a metre means something rather than being described.
Two magnetic strips rather than one, so it does not pivot around a single point when a student pulls a pencil along it.
