Every child already knows what a marble does. That is exactly why these work: the moment one marble drags another across a desk, the expectation breaks, and a five-minute lesson on attraction and repulsion has started itself.
A hundred is enough for a whole class to have a handful each, or for a group to build a chain long enough to argue about. Ten colours also means you can colour-code an experiment - all reds one way round, all blues the other - which is how you get poles across without a diagram.
