Twenty 17mm balls - 70c each, and they spin when they repel
20 plastic-covered magnetic balls, 17mm diameter.
The reason to have spheres rather than discs is that a sphere can rotate. Bring two together the wrong way round and instead of just pushing apart they spin to find their own alignment - which is magnetism visibly solving a problem, and it is far more convincing than a diagram of field lines.
Twenty is a top-up quantity: enough for a pair of students to build and chain, and the right thing to buy when the Fun Pack's original twenty have gradually gone behind the cupboard.
