A wall thermometer big enough to read from a desk
Wall mountable thermometer, -45 to +50 degrees C. Mercury free.
The point of a wall thermometer in a classroom is that nobody has to go and get it. It sits on the wall or the window and the temperature is simply there, every day, all year - which is what turns "measure the temperature" from an activity into a habit. A class that reads the same thermometer every morning for a term ends up with a data set worth graphing.
The -45 to +50 range is a weather range rather than a laboratory one. It is not for heating experiments; it is for the room, the verandah, the shade house and the window.
What is inside it: the supplier states that it "contains a petro-chemical solution that primarily consists of Kerosene", that it "is safe for use in school environments" and that it is mercury-free. We are quoting them rather than paraphrasing, because a fill fluid is the kind of thing a science coordinator will want in the supplier's own words.
One number we do not believe. The supplier lists the dimensions as 380cm x 6.5cm, which would make it a 3.8 metre thermometer. We read that as 380mm - a 38cm scale, which matches the photograph and the description "large". We have asked them to confirm, and we would rather flag it than quietly print either figure as fact.
