Drop the colour on water, stir it, lift the pattern off on paper

Six colours in the kit. For paper marbling. $34.80.

Marbling is one of the few art activities where the result is genuinely a surprise every time, and where a child who "cannot draw" produces something beautiful in ninety seconds. That is worth a lot in a mixed-ability room.

The method is as simple as it gets. Drop the colours onto water. Stir with a satay stick. Lay paper on the surface and lift. The swirl transfers.

Six colours is enough to overlay and blend without a class waiting for a pot.

Use absorbent paper. The supplier is specific: newsprint and similar give the best results. Glossy or coated paper will not take it.

The technique detail worth knowing: the supplier says coloured ink droplets must hit a floating paper disc before spreading over the water surface. That is how the colour is delivered onto the water rather than sinking - and it is the sort of instruction that is easy to skip and then wonder why it did not work.

Three things we have asked about

Which six colours - not named. How much of each - not stated. Whether the floating paper discs are included - the instructions rely on them, and nothing says they are in the box. That last one is the important one, and we have asked.
