A loupe is the opposite trade to a hand magnifier: a tiny field of view and a working distance of about two centimetres, in exchange for real magnification. You hold it right up to your eye and bring the object to the lens. At 10x you can read a hallmark, count the teeth on a leaf edge, see the crystal faces in a piece of granite, or check whether a fibre is wool or synthetic.
The folding metal case is the reason it survives. The lens tucks into the body when it is shut, so it can live in a drawer, a pocket or a field kit without picking up the scratches that ruin an open magnifier.
Useful in a science room, a geology unit, an art department checking print detail, and any classroom where something needs looking at properly rather than approximately.
