Equilateral glass prism. 50mm sides, 60 x 60 x 60 degrees, highly polished.
This is the shape everyone pictures when they hear the word prism, and it is the shape that gives the cleanest spectrum. White light in one face, red through violet out the other, because each colour bends by a slightly different amount. It is one of the few physics demonstrations that works first time, every time, with nothing more than a beam of light.
Highly polished optical glass rather than moulded acrylic, which matters here: a scratched or cloudy face scatters the beam and washes the colours out. The equilateral shape also makes it the right prism for spectrometer work at senior level.
At $11.90 it is cheap enough to buy several so a class is not queuing for one.
