A 75mm pot with a lens in the lid and holes for air - $6.50
75mm acrylic canister. 2x magnifying lens built into the lid, 8 breathing ducts, measuring grid in the base.
At $6.50 this is the one you buy thirty of. Every child gets their own, nobody shares, and the ones that get lost in the long grass do not matter much.
The measuring grid in the base is the detail that earns its place. A child does not just look at the beetle, they say how long it is - which is the difference between looking and observing, and it is the step most bug viewers skip.
Eight breathing ducts. A sealed jar kills what is in it. This one is designed for a creature to sit in for a while and go back out alive, which matters if you want the class to catch things more than once.
Not only for bugs. A 2x lens over a 75mm floor with a grid works just as well on a flower, a leaf, a stamp or a coin - so it stays useful when the minibeast unit finishes.
Acrylic rather than glass, because it is going outside with a seven-year-old.
