Birch describes the tool as a way to make dry felting easier and quicker, for 2D or 3D projects. The five barbed needles poke through the wool with an up and down agitating action, which causes the fibres to interlace and bond. The tool is used in an upright position and punched over an area until the wool has felted and bonded.
Five needles in one handle cover more wool with each punch than a single needle. The safety locking device is part of the tool as supplied. Birch says to use the tool upright and punch over the area until the wool is felted and bonded. It is sold singularly.
