Refill the Tank Instead of Replacing a Cartridge
The Brother BTD180BK is a genuine black ink bottle for the Brother DCP-T580DW and DCP-T780DW refillable ink tank printers, rated by Brother at up to 7,500 pages in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711.
An ink tank printer works differently from a cartridge machine. Rather than clipping a plastic cartridge into a carriage, you pour ink from a bottle into a reservoir built into the printer, and the machine draws from that reservoir until it needs topping up again. The bottle is the consumable, so there is no cartridge to buy and no cartridge shell to throw away. Brother Australia lists two printers for this bottle: the DCP-T580DW and the DCP-T780DW.
One bottle carries enough ink for up to 7,500 pages, several times what a typical replaceable cartridge holds, which is what pulls the cost per page down and makes refills rare rather than routine. Brother rates the black bottle at up to 7,500 pages against up to 5,000 for each colour, both in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711, because black is drawn on in almost every job - the text, the linework, the outlines.
Genuine ink matters more on a tank printer than on a cartridge one, because the printhead is a permanent part of the machine rather than something carried in and out with each cartridge, and it is not a part you can replace yourself. Brother formulates this ink for that printhead. Black is sold as a single bottle. The BTD180CLVAL value pack covers cyan, magenta and yellow only, so black is always ordered on its own.
