The genuine Brother BU-220CL is a colour laser belt unit - the part that carries toner from the drum to the page and keeps the four colours in register - rated by Brother at approximately 50,000 pages.
A colour laser has four wear parts, not one: the toner cartridges, the drum, the belt unit and the waste toner box. The belt is the one most people have never heard of, and it is the one that governs colour alignment. Brother's own fault guidance for colour offset and for a failed colour registration ends with the same instruction - install a new belt unit. If your colours are very slightly out of line with each other, this is the part to look at before anything else. Brother Australia lists it for the HL-3150CDN, HL-3170CDW, DCP-9015CDW, MFC-9140CDN, MFC-9330CDW, MFC-9335CDW and MFC-9340CDW.
Brother rates this belt unit at approximately 50,000 pages. Brother publishes no pages-per-job basis for it, unlike its drum range, so we do not add one - the figure is quoted exactly as Brother gives it. In practice the printer tracks the part itself and will tell you when it is near the end of its life, which is more reliable than any page count.
Your printer will warn you before it stops. Brother's display shows Belt End Soon first, which is the point at which to order, and Replace Belt when it is due. One step people miss: after fitting a new belt you must reset the belt counter in the machine's Parts Life menu, or the printer keeps counting the old one. It works with the DR-251CL drum, the TN-251 and TN-255 toner range and the WT-220CL waste toner box, and the printer reports each of them separately, so they rarely fall due together.
