Odour in a machine is usually detergent residue and biofilm in the drum seal rather than anything the clothes brought in, which is why a hot empty cycle alone rarely fixes it. Front loaders trap the worst of it behind the door gasket and need a treatment run at the machine empty. Top loaders concentrate residue under the agitator. Dose and frequency are on the pack.
