Sharpie

Solvent ink is what makes these mark almost anything, and it is also what makes them bleed through copy paper onto the next page and the desk beneath it. Put something underneath, or step down to a fine tip. On non-porous surfaces the ink sits on top and can often be lifted with alcohol, which is useful to know before labelling something permanently.
