Used dry, they colour like a crayon. Go over the marks with a damp brush and the pigment loosens into watercolour, so a single crayon can give a bold line and a soft background on the same page.

For special effects Staedtler mention layering and scratching: build one shade on another, then scrape through with a blunt tool to reveal the colour beneath. Each crayon is round, about 8 mm across, and wears a paper sleeve to keep hands clean.

Heavier paper such as watercolour or mixed media sheets copes best with water. The 223 also comes in a box of 24, and Staedtler watercolour paint boxes and brushes pair well with it.

Explore watercolour paints, Staedtler colouring supplies, art and craft supplies and Staedtler.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0863/5419/8784/files/Staedtler_Watercolour_Crayons_Box_12_223-C12_1_Mega_Office_Supplies.jpg?v=1791401815
https://megaschoolsupplies.com.au/products/staedtler-223-c12-watercolour-crayon-box-of-12-assorted-colours
