Staedtler point out that you can hold it flat for broad coverage or upright for defined lines, which makes these pencils well suited to large-scale shading, quick tonal blocking and loose, expressive studies.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe core is roughly 6.8 mm across, and a varnished coating on the outside keeps fingers cleaner while you work. Staedtler describe the graphite as finely graded with smooth transitions and a subtle metallic lustre, and the strokes as uniform and repeatable.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSolid graphite has no wood to cushion it, so store the pencils in their tin and avoid dropping them. To shape the point Staedtler suggest sandpaper 923 or their Mars 510 25 double-hole model, and erasing with the Mars plastic 526 50.
