On those machines the red prints from the paper itself - direct thermal with no ink - so a FRAGILE line, a due date or an URGENT flag stands out at a glance.

The trade for the second colour is speed: in black and red these printers slow to a maximum of 24 mm per second, about 15 labels a minute. The roll is also 15.24 metres against the 30.48 metres of the standard 62mm paper roll, which matters when you compare prices between the two.

The three printers that take it are the Brother QL-800, the QL-810W and the QL-820NWB, and the plain black rolls in the Brother DK label range are linked here too.

https://megaschoolsupplies.com.au/products/brother-dk-22251-62mm-x-15-24m-two-colour-black-and-red-on-white-label-roll
